A Nonprofit Community-Service Organization
A Veterans’ Association Devoted to Mutual Helpfulness
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veterans’ organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a nonprofit community service organization that now numbers nearly 3 million members, men, and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.
Message From the Commander
To my comrades in service to our community, state, and nation; brother and sister Legionnaires, Legion Auxiliary Unit members, Sons of the Legion Squadron members, and Legion Riders, my heartfelt best wishes in having a fantastic Legion Year 2022/2023. We share a common vision, mission, and history in serving both the entire Mount Airy Community and our Veterans. That history dates back to 1946. We are once again thriving, engaged and growing, renewing our partnerships internally and expanding our reach externally. My focus this year is strengthening those partnerships within the post, sustaining our membership growth, and expanding our engagements and partnerships with the community. We are bound together by our devotion to mutual helpfulness in supporting our Veterans, our community and our next generation as they continue to serve this great country of ours. I would like us all to demonstrate, not only our commitment to the community, state, and nation, but to each other. Gold Star Post 191 will continue to maintain a welcoming inclusive atmosphere, as together we share and celebrate the “memories and incidents” of ALL our associations. The Gold Star Post will continue to be impactful in everything it does, representing almost 10% of the Town of Mount Airy, we have a tremendous ability to impact the entire community through our service and works. Any prospective partner should always count on us to deliver on the commitment we have spelled out in our preamble. Our Gold Star Post calendar will always be full; enjoying a meal, spending time together in camaraderie, celebrating the past and present, honoring those who have come before, and serving the community, state and nation. The primary host of that calendar, our Post home, becoming the home for every eligible qualifying member, man, woman, or child in our community.
For God and Country!

The American Legion Family
- The Sons of The American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization within The American Legion. The SAL is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and became eligible for membership in The American Legion.
- The American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest patriotic service organization. Through its nearly 10,500 units located in every state and some foreign countries, the Auxiliary embodies the spirit of America that has prevailed through war and peace. Along with The American Legion, it solidly stands behind America and her ideals.
- The American Legion Riders is a diverse group of motorcycle enthusiasts sharing common goals. All are members or spouses of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of The American Legion, and all are united by patriotism. They answer the call to ride in service to America’s military, her veterans, and for the children and youth of our country.
